This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together exists a deep meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they still love each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
