The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and defining moments – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of multiple weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing everyone his designs for an ornate dance hall two times larger of the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of deaths resulting from his reductions to USAID amounts to 600,000 and rising, and this week research projected his petroleum strategies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have attempted – truly, no previous leader would have imagined – independently wrecking major areas of the executive mansion to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of numerous America's wealthiest, almost all of whom conduct transactions with public institutions.
We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' toward 'the humble will perish from cholera'
As disorienting as it is to witness the leader seek to颠覆 the traditional concept regarding democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who should not find it completely novel. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we were raised with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of compassion into a symbol of hostility who approves specifically the brutality that he condemned in the Gospel; this change developed more slowly, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and given that the quickly increasing segment among Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves skeptics or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that there are pearls of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is unquestionably not the account of an authoritative monarch appearing; rather, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to escape covert authorities. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his doctrine concerns compassion for fellow humans, especially for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to turn the additional cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a method to teach the assailant; his method regarding offenses is that if a person pilfers your outer garment you ought to provide them your pullover too.
The apparent and direct fact that the Savior from scripture advocates for a kind of extreme compassion centered on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: attractive to the general public, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Highest of Us
Hence I have become inspired to witness the steadfast resistance against Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as great solace to help build the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired voters to show up in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags throughout each rally and calls to the finest aspects in US history.
We're going to be asked ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you welcome them and embrace them or reject?
America is best defended, in other words, through connection to the best within national tradition, just as Christianity is best defended through connection to that which renders it unique and beautiful, specifically the model of Christ. In both situations does it imply feigning the most negative regarding America and Christianity did not happen; it represents both humility and belief, a combination that committed national faithful should be comfortable with.
