The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show nears, there’s always a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge game development, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
