The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
