Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress Following Deluge of Harassment Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on women's health research and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the edge of space.

The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.

The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
