Safety Advice for Defence Staff

In a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about secret information while travelling in Chinese cars.

He stated that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however noted that safety is a issue in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any kind of car, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to only have those secret talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every cars from China, the minister responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Wider Defence Context

The revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and cause chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
