European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
